Copyright for social media

We need to talk about something… (please don’t stop reading, this is important)… copyright.

I know, I know! Ick! Boo! Copyright is boring I hear you say. Copyright may be boring and difficult to understand… (I am no expert btw)… but it is integral to the integrity of any business or organisation, big or small, and should be respected and followed to protect us all.

Copyright is designed to protect the person who created the content – the photographer, the writer, the composer – because it is their intellectual property. It is their idea and they created it so they should get the credit! Think about it. How would you feel if people stole  your work?

The copyright owner has every right to ask you to take down your posts if you are using their content. In fact, they have every right to pursue their legal options if you have been using their content and profiting from it. Avoid getting yourself into trouble and follow these basic do’s and dont’s:


Publish content that you have created yourself – invest in your own photography/videography skills so you can create your own content or employ a professional photographer/videographer to create content for you.

Publish content that is free of copyright restrictions – there are heaps of websites where you can source amazing copyright free photos either for purchase or for free. Read this blog post for more information and suggestions for great websites to try.

Publish content that you have permission from the creator to use and credit them – most people on social media will be happy for you to share their content but good etiquette is to ask first and make sure you acknowledge where you got the photo.


Steal images – I often see images that have clearly been taken from another account or saved from a website with no credit given to the original creator of the image. You are breaking copyright law if you “right click and save” or “take a screenshot” of an image from a website or another social media account.

Credit photos to Pinterest – Pinterest does not own the copyright to any of the images that are on its platform, the person who originally created the image does. You should not use the image unless you have found the original copyright owner and asked their permission to use it and credit them.

Why you need to be using hashtags

Hashtags, hashtags, hashtags! What are they, why should I use them and which ones should I use? If these are your questions then listen up because I am here to answer them for you!

What is a hashtag

#Hashtags – where the hash symbol is placed in front of a word or letter/number combination – are a well known part of today’s digital culture, in fact, the word was added to the Oxford dictionary in 2010, and is even in the the Scrabble Dictionary.

Hashtags now have a place on most popular social networks including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest. The purpose of a hashtag is to categorise and make content searchable and discoverable on social media. The hashtag also allows you to connect with and engage other social media users based on a common theme or interest.

Why you should use hashtags

Hashtags are the most effective way for potential customers to discover you on social media. When a user searches or clicks on a hashtag they are more likely to find you! The more specific you can get with your hashtags, the more targeted your audience will be and a targeted audience generally means better engagement and better engagement is likely to mean more customers.

Which hashtags should you use

Choosing which hashtags to use depends on WHAT you want to achieve from your social channels, WHAT your business is and WHERE your business is.

WHAT do you want to achieve – Let’s be honest. Some people just want to have a big follower number and if this is you then make sure you have a really pretty feed and use very general hashtags such as #entrepreneur #fashion #free #gay #food. This will get your follower number up but don’t expect those followers to turn into customers. However, if you want real followers who are real customers then you need to be more strategic with WHAT and WHERE your business is.

WHAT is your business – A cafe would use very different hashtags than an accountant or a fashion store. Every hashtag that you choose should relate to your business and how potential customers would discover you. For example, if your business is a cafe then you should consider using hashtags that include #food #coffee #breakfast and whatever your specialties are such as #vegan #acaibowl #coconutwhip #streetfood #glutenfree and other yummy words.

WHERE is your business – Consider where your business is located and use local hashtags. If your cafe is in Broadbeach on the Gold Coast then consider using #broadbeachcafe #broadbeachcoffee #broadbeachfood and #goldcoastcafe #goldcoastcoffee #goldcoastfood.

Do your research

To really nail your hashtags you need to spend time researching which ones are right for your business. Spend some time searching for different hashtags, see what other businesses like yours are using and ask people how they would search for you. Doing your research will really pay off!

Networking online and in real life helps to build the presence of you and your business. The more visible you are, the more opportunities will come your way.

Five tools to level up your Instagram marketing

Do you want to make the most of your Instagram marketing? Here are five tools to level up your Insta action!

Make it pretty

Instagram is a visual platform so everything you post on your account needs to be visually engaging. There are lots of photo and design platforms out there but Canva is my favourite DIY graphic design platform. I recommend upgrading to the paid subscription so you can create and save your own branding colours and templates to make your creative workflow and working with teams easier.

Free stock images

Whether you are creating social, web or print materials for your business there is one thing that we all know – finding great images is a challenge. Buying stock images over and over again is expensive but don’t worry, that is not your only option. There are plenty of websites that provide a great range of free stock photos and I have gathered some of the best for you! Find a list of the best here.


If you’re managing an Instagram account for your business then you should be using a social media management and scheduling tool that allows you to publish directly to Instagram. This allows you to plan and schedule your Instagram posts ahead of time. There are many tools out there you can use but this article from Social Media Examiner explores six of the most popular tools that allow you to link multiple social media channels. If you want to keep it simple and love planning your Instagram page visually then try Planoly. There are various free and paid subscription options available with each platform so do some research, give a few a go and choose what works best for you.

Link in bio

Instagram doesn’t let you add hyperlinks to your posts, in fact, it only allows you to have one hyperlink in your bio which means that every time you write ‘link in bio’ in your post you have to update your one hyperlink. Linktree is the best tool ever because it allows you to add multiple hyperlinks! There is a free and paid option and it is super easy to setup.

But are they real followers?

IG Audit is a fun and useful free tool for establishing whether an Instagram account has an authentic and engaged audience or whether they have a lot of bots or spam accounts making up their follower count. This can be useful to understand your followers or if you are looking to find an influencer to promote your brand. Just because an account has 50,000 followers doesn’t mean that they have 50,000 real people engaging with their content. Did they buy these followers? Does anyone ever comment and engage in a conversation?
